Asphalt Plant Technician Training Course

Asphalt Plant Technician Training Course

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION
This course covers Asphalt Plant Technician Certification only.

The Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) is pleased to offer its annual Asphalt Plant Technician Certification Training to help individuals prepare for the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) certification examinations required under the agency's Quality Assurance Program.

Important Certification Update

All new Asphalt Plant Technician certification applicants must complete a minimum of 40 hours of documented hands-on training under the supervision of a WVDOH Certified Asphalt Plant Technician.

Required Hands-On Training

Participants must complete hands-on training in the tests on which they will be evaluated:

  • ASTM D6926 – Preparation of Asphalt Mixtures by Means of the Marshall Apparatus
  • AASHTO T 312 – Preparing and Determining the Density of Asphalt Mixture Specimens by Means of the Superpave Gyratory Compactor
  • AASHTO T 166 – Bulk Specific Gravity (GMB) of Compacted Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Using Saturated Surface-Dry Specimens
  • AASHTO T 331 – Bulk Specific Gravity (GMB) and Density of Compacted Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Using the Automatic Vacuum Sealing Method
  • AASHTO T 209 – Theoretical Maximum Specific Gravity (GMM) and Density of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA)
  • ASTM D6927 – Resistance to Plastic Flow of Asphalt Mixtures Using the Marshall Apparatus
  • AASHTO T 308 – Determining the Asphalt Binder Content of Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) by the Ignition Method, Method A
  • AASHTO T 30 – Mechanical Analysis of Extracted Aggregate
  • AASHTO T 269 – Standard Method of Test for Percent Air Voids in Compacted Dense and Open Asphalt Mixtures
After Training

After the participant completes the required training, the supervising WVDOH Certified Asphalt Plant Technician must complete the Hands-On Training Log Sheet and include their printed name, signature, certification number and date of completion. The completed log sheet must then be submitted electronically to the WVDOH Quality Assurance Program Administrator.

The participant will be contacted by the WVDOH Materials Control, Soils & Testing (MCS&T) Asphalt Section to schedule the practical examination. The practical examination may be attempted before completion of the apprenticeship cycle.

The practical examination must be completed within 90 days of the original written examination date.
