Asphalt Field & Compaction Technician Course

Asphalt Field & Compaction Technician Course

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION
This course covers Asphalt Field & Compaction Technician Certification.
Radiation Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation Training will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13. This training is required to operate a nuclear testing gauge.

The Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) is pleased to offer its annual Asphalt Field & Compaction Technician Certification Training to help individuals prepare for the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) certification examinations required under the agency's Quality Assurance Program.

A certified Asphalt Field Technician is required on all paving projects. This course is also required for individuals who perform Asphalt Compaction testing.

Important Certification Update

All new Asphalt Field & Compaction Technician certification applicants must complete a minimum of 40 hours of documented hands-on training under the supervision of a WVDOH-certified Asphalt Field & Compaction Technician.

Required Hands-On Training
  • AASHTO T 355 – Standard Method of Test for In-Place Density of Asphalt Mixtures by Nuclear Methods
  • Specification 401 – Gauge Comparison
After Training

After the participant completes the required training, the supervising WVDOH-certified Asphalt Field & Compaction Technician must complete the Hands-On Training Log Sheet and include their printed name, signature, certification number and date of completion. The completed log sheet must then be submitted electronically to the WVDOH Quality Assurance Program Administrator.

The participant will be contacted by the WVDOH Materials Control, Soils & Testing (MCS&T) Pavement Analysis and Evaluation Section to schedule the practical examination. The practical examination may be attempted before completion of the apprenticeship cycle.

The practical examination must be completed within 90 days of the original written examination date.

Radiation Safety Requirement

A technician who does not demonstrate proper radiation safety will not be permitted to continue testing on a WVDOH project and must be replaced by another qualified technician. Before another evaluation may be conducted, the technician must provide proof of additional WVDOH-approved radiation safety training.
